Berlin Codex Also known as the Akhmim Codex, Papyrus Berolinensis 8502, Berlin Gnostic Papyrus, and Berlin Papyrus. A Coptic codex dating to the fifth century that contains the Gospel of Mary, Apocryphon of John, Sophia of Jesus Christ, and Act of Peter. It was discovered near Akhmim, Egypt, in 1896 and is now housed in Berlin.
The Berlin Codex is one of several codices that originated in Egypt and contains gnostic literature; the others include the Codex Tchacos, Bruce Codex, Askew Codex, and the Nag Hammadi codices. Of the four tractates that appear on the Berlin Codex, portions of the Apocryphon of John and the Sophia of Jesus Christ also appear in the Nag Hammadi codices.
