Possible Locations and Archaeology

The city of Pithom was located near the eastern edge of the Nile Delta (Wells, “Exodus,” 167–68). Peet suggests Pithom was a city on a canal that connected the Nile with the Red Sea, and was later renamed Heroonopolis by the Greeks (Peet, Egypt and the Old Testament, 87). Archaeologists have debated multiple sites as the original location of Pithom. Two sites are most often given as the approximate location of the original city: Tell el Maskhuta and Tell el Retabeh.
