Gergesa A location on the eastern side of the Sea of Galilee. Gergesa is one of the possible locations for the incident where Jesus cast many demons out of a man and permitted them to enter a herd of pigs (Matt 8:28–9:1; Mark 5:1–20; Luke 8:26–39). The demons then caused the pigs to rush down the hill into the sea and drown. There is debate over the location of this event, however, due to variations between manuscripts of the Synoptic Gospels. For a discussion of the relationship between Gergesa, Gerasa, and Gadara, see this article: Gerasenes.
