Nineveh chief city of Assyria, located on the bank of the Tigris River. Jonah the prophet announced God’s judgment in the city, leading its people to repent (Jon. 3). In 612 b.c., about a hundred years and fifty years after Jonah’s time, the city was destroyed by the Babylonians and Medes. As foretold by Old Testament prophets, the city was left in ruins, never to be rebuilt (Nah. 2:10, 13; Zeph. 2:13–15).
