Moses humble hero of Israel, called by God to lead the Israelites out of Egypt to the promised land. God gave him the Ten Commandments at Mount Sinai (Exod. 19–20). He instructed the people in the worship of the Lord (Lev. 1–27). He was allowed to see Canaan but died without entering it (Deut. 34). Moses is believed to be the author of the first five books of the Bible.
